This topic describes common tasks you can perform in the Visual Mobile Designer
(VMD).

Follow these steps |
Create a new project that uses the VMD. |
- Choose File > New Project.
This opens the New Project wizard.
- Under Categories, Choose Mobile. Under Projects, choose the Mobile
Application template.
- In the Name and Location page, check the Create Hello MIDlet checkbox.

Create a file within a project that uses the VMD. |
- Choose File > New File.
This opens the New File wizard.
- Under Categories, Choose MIDP. Under File Types, choose either the
Visual MIDlet or Visual Design template.
- In the Name and Location page, specify the name and location for the
new MIDlet.

Open the Flow Designer |
- Open or create a visual design document.
- Click the Flow Design button
in the Designer toolbar.

Open the Screen Editor |
- Open or create a visual design document.
- Click the Screen Design
button in the Designer toolbar.

Open the Action Editor |
- Open the Action Editor by double-clicking on a transition line in the Flow Designer.
- Click on the Ellipsis button in the Action
Properties in the Properties window.

Locate unguarded (editable) code |
- Right-click on a component or transition in the Flow Designer, or
a form in the Screen Designer, and choose Go To Source.
The Source Editor opens and the cursor is placed at the first line of
unguarded code (code that can be edited) that defines that component,
transition, or form.
Note that shaded code is "guarded" code, and can not be edited. |
Add a UI screen to the Flow Designer |
- Select a component from the Screens category of the Component Palette
and drag it into the Flow Design window.

Add commands to the application flow |
- Select a command from the Commands category of the Component Palette
and drag it on to the screen from where the command will be initiated.
- Drag a line from the command to a target component.
- Optionally, double-click on a line to edit the command action in the source code.

Redesign the layout in the Flow Designer |
- With the Flow Designer open, place the mouse cursor over the transition line.
Each command line angle and intersection point becomes a red square
that can be dragged vertically or horizontally to redesign the layout.

Add custom components to the Component Palette |
- Ensure the class you want to use is in your project's classpath.
- Right-click in the Component Palette and choose Palette Manager.
The Palette Manager opens.
- Click the Add From Project button.
- Select the project that contains the object you want to add to the
Component Palette. Click next.
- Select any objects you want to add from the list of Found MIDP Classes.
- Choose a category from the Add to Category drop-down menu.
The wizard will add the components to the selected category in the Component
Palette.
- Optionally, check the Show Components from Libraries option to add
class components from the libraries and resources of the project.
- Some components listed might be used by the emulator for internal
processes, and therefore can not be added to your application.
- Click Close to add the components.

- Right-click in the Flow Design window and choose Export Flow Image.
The IDE creates a graphic file in the .Portable Networks Graphics (PNG)
format that you can save on your system.
